Use too much scrap
- Oxide Inclusion porosity or fracture - Impurity fracture - Red stain - Hard spots
- Use less than 50% of scrap in high karat gold alloy casting. - Use less than 30% in sterling and low karat casting. - Make sure the scrap is cleaned prior to use.
Use contaminated scrap for casting
- Oxide inclusion porosity or fracture - Impurity fracture - Gas porosity - Hard spots - Red stain problem
- Clean the scrap with dilute sulfuric acid (10%) and/or tumbling to remove the oxide and gypsum powder. - Limited the use of scrap.
Casting / melting in open atmosphere
- Oxide inclusion porosity or fracture - Red stain problem - Hard spots
- Covered the melt with inert gas or yellow flame.
Torch casting
- Oxide Inclusion porosity or fracture - Red stain problem
- Only applicable for high karat casting. - Never use acetylene for melting. - Reduce the amount of scrap used.
Too high casting temperature
- Gas porosity - Dendritic surface - Red stain problem
- Lower the casting temperature according to the Technical Specification. - Check the accuracy of the thermocouple.
Too low casting temperature
- Incomplete form-filling - Shrinkage porosity and/or fracture - Impurity inclusion
- Increase the casting temperature according to the Technical Specification. - Check the accuracy of the thermocouple.
Too high flask temperature
- Gas porosity - Dendritic surface - Red stain problem - Hard Spots
- Lower the flask temperature until getting a smoother surface. - Only filigree parts required higher flask temperature. - Check the efficiency of the vacuum. - Check the sprueing. - Do not cast over-sized tree. - Check the oven temperature accuracy.
Too low flask temperature
- Incomplete form-filling - Shrinkage porosity and/or fracture - Impurity inclusion
- Increase the flask temperature according to the size of the casts. - Check the oven temperature Accuracy.
Improper sprueing
- Incomplete form-filling - Impurity inclusion - Shrinkage porosity or fracture
- Check whether the sprue is thick enough. - Check if it is in the thickest part. - Additional sprues required for large pieces. - The tree should not be too large.
Improper burnout process
- Fins and sandy surface - Inclusion porosity
- Check the program of the burnout process. - The burnout oven should not be overcrowded. - Do not use over-sized flask for casting.
